Madonna and movie director Guy Ritchie, a tabloid dream of a trans-Atlantic celebrity couple, are planning to divorce after eight years of marriage, the singer's spokeswoman said.
Madonna, 50, was so enamored of the British director -- who is 10 years her junior -- that she left the U.S. to make England her home. The much-photographed couple divided their time between a central London townhouse and a country estate.
They haven't agreed to a settlement and asked the media to respect their privacy, according to a statement e-mailed to the Associated Press and co-signed by a representative for Ritchie. Liz Rosenberg, the singer's New York-based spokeswoman, confirmed the report in an e-mail.
The two met through rock musician Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, in 1999. They had a son, Rocco, now 8 years old, in August 2000 and married four months later at a Scottish castle. Madonna also has a daughter, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon, now 12, from a relationship in 1994 with fitness trainer Carlos Leon, and in 2006 she adopted a baby from Malawi, David Banda.
Madonna is one of the most successful pop stars of all time and is currently touring the U.S. Tonight, she'll perform at a sold-out concert in Boston.
